The Ancient Lake- Graves Park

This historical park contains three Lakes. Originally part of the Norton estate and referred to in the Doomsday book of 1087.

Once owned by The Shore family in the 19th century, who rebuilt the hall and extended the grounds of the estate which evidently formed our beautiful park land.

In 1925, 112 acres of the Estate were purchased by Hospitals and the Council to provide a hospital for the people. Bernard Firth at this point, gifted 7 and a half acres of land to the hospital and Councillor Graves bought 154 acres of the Estate to provide the people of Sheffield with a sports and recreational space surrounding the hospital which helped protect the land from pollution and development. This is where the name comes from.

At this point, the ancient lakes were cleaned out to be used as a boating lake and were actually filled with fish. They were what separated the hospital grounds from the park itself.

So, just how old is this ancient lake (and the two others)?

You may be surprised to hear that they are clearly seen on maps dated from 1884 but they do pre-date these maps to the Medieval era.

The Ancient lake I have drawn here, is the top lake. A small Island sits perfectly in the middle and provides protection for water birds. If you look closely, you will spot the little homes that have been placed there for the birds to enjoy. It is very heartwarming. A very special historical spot in Graves Park.
